MONTRAVIAS D. KING

Montravias King is a policy advocate, public servant, and proud Charlottean running for City Council to ensure our city’s growth is smart, inclusive, and truly benefits every neighborhood.

 

Born and raised in eastern North Carolina, Montravias learned early on that leadership means standing up—even when it’s hard. As a college student at Elizabeth City State University, he made history by challenging voter suppression laws after being denied the opportunity to run for office simply because he lived on campus. His victory helped change state law and sparked a lifelong commitment to equity, democracy, and public service.

 

Since then, Montravias has dedicated his career to building stronger communities. He has worked on the front lines of housing justice, environmental policy, and civic engagement. He has over four years of experience in the classroom and served two legislators in the NC General Assembly as a Legislative Assistant. As the inaugural Director of the Justice40 Accelerator, he helped local organizations nationwide secure funding to address climate and infrastructure inequities. He also serves on several nonprofit boards, including Keep Charlotte Beautiful, Southeastern Wind Coalition, and Energize NC. His community service is centered on supporting youth development, workforce development, and an equitable clean energy transition.

 

Montravias made Charlotte his home because he saw its potential—and he’s running because all must share that potential. The stakes are real in District 3, which includes neighborhoods like West Boulevard, Steele Creek, Nations Ford, and South Tryon. Too many residents are being priced out, shut out, or overlooked as the city grows.

 

On City Council, Montravias will fight for:

 

  • Safer neighborhoods and commercial districts rooted in community trust
  • Smart growth that prioritizes support for historic crescent neighborhoods and allowing seniors to aging in place.
  • Affordable housing and infrastructure that keep pace with our growth.
  • Economic development that supports Charlotte Douglass International Airport (the crown jewel of the city) and small businesses and working families.
